With all this talk about gambling at present, I was reminded of a letter sent by one of your regular contributors, Fred Boulden, 12 months ago.

He was referring to a satellite dish being installed without permission on a listed building. A dish that could be clearly seen from the street but one that the council's blinkered staff could not see.

Having been trying, without success, to get the owner of the property to remove a CCTV camera stuck on the front elevation of the property for four years, The Argus published a response to Fred's letter from me in which I offered Fred a bet that the satellite dish would still be there in 12 months' time.

What a pity we didn't make that bet as I would be collecting my winnings now.
