I agree with B Jones (Letters, October 16) that hardworking taxpayers should not support the Diego Garcians.

They should be supported by the tax paid by arms dealers and weapons suppliers because they were evicted from their island for it to become a military base.

The situation they are in is of our making, not theirs. They clearly want to become hard-working taxpayers themselves.

They are not the first immigrants to arrive without speaking English or having recognised skills.

They can learn. When they and their children become nurses, doctors and teachers or do vital but unskilled jobs we shall know we have done the right thing by helping them.
