Want to know how good rugby life is at Lewes these days?

How about newly promoted, four wins from four, second in the league and running in some great tries.

Then throw in the fact that a local pub, the Elephant and Castle, sponsored their most recent win and supplied beer at pitchside as well as from the rather distant clubhouse.

As commercial ventures go, it was not quite Palookaville and new shirts, maybe, but does life for the Lewes faithful really get any better than Saturday's heady cocktail?

The men from the Stanley Turner Ground are looking down on most of London Two South after a 32-3 four-try defeat of Sidcup.

It is all so upbeat that coach Paul Taylor, who once had to build his players up, now might find himself attempting to keep feet on the ground.

Asked if his team's start to the season had surprised him, he admitted: "It has really. Our aim for the season was to be in mid-table and build for next season.

"Losing two key second rows early on was a big blow but what we have now is a reasonable second team with players who can step up to this level, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

"Realistically we are not good enough to go up again.

"We played London Scottish in the cup. They are a league above us and they were a different class.

"What we need to do is get near that level and maybe attract players to the club but the future looks bright."

Lewes will find defences tougher and opposition goalkickers less forgiving as they move upwards.

Just as well, then, they are well served by their own high-energy, well-organised defensive structure and a reliable kicker in Neil Rumble.

Their finishing was less incisive than it might have been on Saturday.

Taylor felt they kicked the ball or tried to batter their way through the middle too often.

In fact, they had to wait until the last of nine minutes of first-half stoppage time to score their first try but winger Sean Taylor insisted he was never worried.

Taylor, one of three second-half try scorers, said: "We were relying on our rugby to come through. We've got such high confidence now, just give us a little break and we'll punish a side.

"The main aim is to get to the 22 and score from there.

"Defensively, we've changed a few things and that has come on really well. It starts with the back row. They were were excellent.

"We said we wanted to nail them and, okay, they got three points, but we'll settle for that."

Centre Scott Patto ended the long wait for a try, coasting in unopposed after Sidcup ran out of tacklers in thwarting a charge by hooker Mark Edmondson.

Good support play was key to the killer second try eight minutes after the break, Matt Sole scoring at the posts after winger Tom Saunders had been given room in which to run.

The final 14 points came in the last five minutes. Mike Rust, on as a back row replacement, appeared in the centre to help make an extra man, resulting in Patto looking to go outside, then lobbing a pass inside for Rumble to hand on to Taylor, who scored.

Then battering-ram centre Mark Barnard had enough power to get to the posts after impressive driving play up the middle of the park for the final try.

A fine finale on the day but there is more to come from this Lewes team.
