It is surprising the Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion is calling for more city parking and saying no to increased parking and congestion charges in his Unblock Brighton campaign.

Congestion charges have proved successful in reducing car use and improving public transport flow and passengership in London. By catching an express bus from Victoria recently, Paddington station was reached in record time.

The pollution hotspots in Brighton, designated air quality management zones to be controlled within a time limit, will not be achieved by encouraging more cars into the City.

Extra exhaust fumes will exacerbate an already high level of respiratory problems.

Indeed, the Goverment will fail to meet next year's targets for cutting city smog and air pollution, putting the elderly and sick at risk.

Professor Pilling, the country's air quality adviser, says not enough has been done to reduce urban traffic and stem the rise in background ozone.

Despite technological improvements to reduce emissions of pollutants, we will not meet Government and EU objectives to protect human health.

He comments: "We clearly have to continue to look at improvements in technology but we also have to change the way we do things, in particular the way we use cars."

With constant news of environmental disasters worldwide and at home, action must be taken urgently to lessen climate change.

The Prime Minister has warned of the "alarming and unsustainable" consequences of global warming and was "shocked" by the latest scientific forecasts about the future.

We must think and do more to curb congestion, pollution and climate change.
