The programme on BBC television last week about the Brighton Bomb made me ashamed of the way we treat firefighters.

No one who saw their courage when they were given the choice of whether or not to enter the Grand hotel and all chose to go in (a second bomb could have gone off) can doubt they deserve higher rewards for what they do.

When the building was cleared because the police believed another device was about to explode, they refused to leave the victim they were rescuing.

Of course, this famous incident is only one of many we never hear about.

Surely we should pay them more?
