So, Falmer has become a political football. Hasn't it been so since the day former council leader Steve Bassam put the one and only question to the voters of the city? If my memory serves me well, it was: "Do you want a football stadium at Falmer?"
It was a clever ploy to get the voters out at the local elections, 68 per cent for Falmer and 32 per cent against. Those figures would have stacked up the same whatever site was nominated.
It was also political when it went to the then planning committee, as every single planning committee member that voted for the stadium did so because they knew they would not be returned at the impending local elections.
Falmer is not the right site. The infrastructure of Falmer, Woodingdean and Rottingdean cannot cope now with existing traffic, so it certainly won't be able to cope with the additional traffic.
