Sussex are still in with a chance of promotion in the totesport League after crushing Scottish Saltires by 114 runs in Edinburgh.

Michael Yardy, opening in the absence of the injured Ian Ward, top scored with 83 as Sussex took advantage of a woeful fielding and bowling performance by the Scots to post 263-6 from their 45 overs.

They then dismissed their opponents for 149 in 34.5 overs with Mushtaq Ahmed helping himself to four wickets.

Wins in their three remaining matches - starting at home to Worcestershire Royals - could see Sussex sneak into third place and after four successive victories, the last two by margins of over 100 runs, they are full of confidence.

Director of Cricket Peter Moores said: "I think it's a good sign that we've had two comfortable wins against weaker teams in the last week, we're playing good cricket at the moment. It keeps things bubbling for the last three games."

Sussex's total was the highest of the season at The Grange with Yardy and Matt Prior getting the innings off to a flier. Prior made 44 from 39 balls before he fell to Yasir Arafat who soon picked up the wicket of skipper Chris Adams.

When Yardy, who hit five boundaries, was run out coming back for a tight second run after Mark Davis had driven to long off, Luke Wright hammered 25 off 13 balls as Sussex plundered 32 from the last two overs.

Only Gregor Maiden threatened to take the attack to Sussex with a hard-hitting 32, including four boundaries and a straight six off Mushtaq. However, the leg-spinner took a simple return catch to claim his revenge.

Davis picked up 2-20 while the seamers shared the other wickets.

Ward has a thigh strain and is 50-50 for the clash with Worcestershire so Sussex will be unchanged.
