There has been a lot of publicity recently about plans to install bus lanes on the approaches to Rottingdean traffic lights.
Last Monday I used this route at about half past four in the afternoon and expected the usual hold-up at the lights but there was hardly any delay, the traffic flowed smoothly and there was only a short queue of cars coming out of Rottingdean High Street. The reason? The traffic lights had stopped working.
This suggests that a better solution would be to remove the lights, install a mini roundabout to calm the traffic and an underpass for pedestrians. Then, all the traffic would get through quickly, not just the buses.
The cost would be a lot less than altering the road over a long stretch, and it wouldn't involve disruptive roadworks lasting two years, which the present plans involve.
