St James' Montefiore have won the Sussex Junior Festival under-12s crown for the first time.

The Ditchling-based club beat Eastbourne by ten wickets in the Bowl final.

George Taylor, Jason Hong, John Glover and Adam Davis were required by Sussex under-12s but Saints cruised to victory after restricting Eastbourne to 95-6.

Sam Smith (47) and captain Michael Gibbs (37) were the opening batsmen in form.

Manager Talant Malik said: "We're very proud of the players because they showed they have depth of talent.

"It is a hugely significant win because people like to be associated with success and a well-run club."

St James' Montefiore bowled tightly and quicks Charles Davis and James Howard claimed two wickets each.

Earlier in group matches, Charles Davis claimed three wickets against Ifield and Taylor was unbeaten on 55 in the victory against Ansty.

But Saints were left to sweat on their place in the final after a surprise setback against Brighton and Hove but they went through when Horsham lost to Chichester.

It has been a great season for the Saints who completed the hat-trick after winning the Sussex Indoors Under-12s Championship and Brighton and Hove League.

Eastbourne, without eight regulars, relied on Imran Iqbal (38) for their runs.

Colts manager Peter Bibby said: "Five players were involved with Sussex, two were on holiday and one was taken ill on the morning of the final. It was far from ideal preparation. But we got to the final which is a decent effort."

David Twine took 3-0 off ten balls against Lewes Priory in a group match and Ollie Smith (73) and Peter Wooldridge (65) impressed with the bat.

Captain Darryl Rebbetts led by example as East Preston won their first festival title.

Rebbetts hit 72 not out to help East Preston lif the under-12s' Shield with victory against Felpham at Goring. Jack Sunderland made 33 before Rebbetts and Tom Chamberlain shared a quickfire partnership of 45 runs, including 19 from the final over.

Ed Gyde took 2-21 for Felpham who were all out for 110 and Shaun Maskell scored 57.

Rebbetts, Scott Parsons, Jack Hosgood and Hayley Fern took two wickets apiece.

Rebbetts totalled 372 runs in the week-long festival.

He scored 57 and took three wickets in a 164-run group win against Worthing, made 95 in a scoring draw against Goring, 24 in an 83-run victory over Findon and an undefeated 124 in a victory over St Peter's (Brighton). He also took three wickets and Parsons five against St Peter's.

Manager Keith Chamberlain said: "Darryl plays for the district and I've recommended him to the West Sussex set-up.

"Hayley took a vital catch which dismissed Maskell when he looked like beating us single-handed."

Rebbetts also enjoyed success at tennis during the week.

Chamberlain said: "Darryl is a member at Angmering and took advantage of a few hours off to win a plate singles final and doubles title."
