Six people were injured when their car skidded off a dual carriageway and crashed.
The vehicle ploughed into a lamp post and came to rest on a grass verge at the side of the southbound carriageway of the A23 near Pyecombe.
Four women and the two babies were hurt in the accident, which happened at about 6.30pm on Saturday.
A woman believed to be 80 suffered severe injuries and had a heart attack at the scene.
She was resuscitated by paramedics and taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where her condition is thought to be serious.
The crash took place just yards from the spot where eight people died when two vehicles collided on May 16.
