The local elections were a referendum on the Iraq war and the Prime Minister has lost the argument.

This is a great shame because, since 1997, he and the Chancellor have achieved great things on the economy, education and the NHS.

As a nation, we are deeply grateful but he can't lead the Labour Government to an historic third term.

The baton must pass to another generation.

We must all prepare for a post-Blair Labour Britain. With a 165 seat majority there can be an orderly and decent election so that a new Prime Minster emerges.

Mr Blair can play his part by going and going quickly. He will then receive the respect and gratitude of the nation.
