I have read with interest the correspondence sparked off by Daisy Burgess's letter regarding St George's Church.
The proposed addition of a post office at the rear of this once beautiful example of a listed Georgian building is described as "architecturally sympathetic" by Councillor Warren Morgan.
Contrast these comments with the judgement of the chief conservation office who says in his report, "the proposed structure would be a large, rectangular, solid rendered block of utilititarian appearance which would mask virtually half of the north elevation, covering up half of the ground floor windows." He goes on to say much else besides, all of it highly critical.
I was a member of the Friends of St George's association set up by members of the congregation and local residents until it was disbanded after the present vicar took over.
Its aim was to raise funds so that this architectural gem in the heart of Kemp Town remained a gem.
The appearance of the church was a credit to the neighbourhood and there was a thriving congregation too. It was an excellent example of how to have a living church and to preserve it as part of our national heritage as well.
Thanks, Daisy, for publicising the issue.
