More than 450 people have objected to plans to extend a seafront night spot.

Some have formed the Babylon Lounge Protest Committee to fight moves to expand the venue in Western Esplanade, off Kingsway, Hove.

The plans include adding a second storey to the building, increasing its capacity to 936.

Despite the opposition, Brighton and Hove City Council planning officers are recommending councillors approve the scheme.

A petition signed by 442 people has been sent in to the council as well as many letters from people concerned about noise, traffic and the size of the building.

Hove Civic Society says the tall building will overshadow the area and conservationists recommend refusal.

Sussex Police are concerned about the size of the venue but say there are opportunities to create a well-managed night spot.

One group of residents from Kingsway supports the proposal in principle.

Planning officer Paul Earp said: "Approval is recommended on the grounds that without redevelopment, existing problems are likely to continue."

Approval would include a condition to include staggered closing times for the separate sections.

There would also be a liaison group with neighbours to resolve any problems and a taxi pick-up area.

Mr Earp said the current building did not enhance the character of the conservation area while the new scheme gave an opportunity for a better building.

A separate application to demolish shelters on the Western Lawns is also recommended for approval in principle if replacements are provided.

Councillors meet on Wednesday.
