Rock musician Keith Emerson is planning to leave California and move to Hove - to be near his mum.

Keith, of the Seventies rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has lived in Santa Monica since 1994.

But he revealed he now wants to sell his American mansion and move back to Sussex, where he grew up.

His mother, Dorothy, lives in Lancing, and his two sons, Aaron and Damon, live in Brighton.

Keith said: "I live in Santa Monica but I would like to sell up and move back to the Hove area. Having been brought up in Worthing, I don't like living too far from the sea.

"I moved to Santa Monica because I was doing a lot of film scores and it made more sense for me to live there. When you are dealing with the film industry they really need you there all the time."

Keith brought his mother along to the unveiling of a pop art portrait of himself at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.

Worthing radio station Splash FM commissioned the painting and a similar canvas of singer Leo Sayer, who was raised in Shoreham and studied in Worthing.

Worthing-based artist, John Oakley approached Splash managing director Roy Stannard with the idea.

The multi-coloured acrylic paintings will now grace the foyer of the radio station, which is based at the Guildborne Centre shopping precinct.

Dorothy, a former cook-supervisor at West Park School in Goring, Worthing, said: "I am very proud of Keith. We are always on the telephone. He never forgets his mum."

Keith, a former pupil at West Tarring High School for Boys, said: "I don't get great pleasure even looking at my photograph but it is very flattering to be acknowledged by one's home town.

"I do like my hair in that mauve colour."

The paintings depict both Keith and Leo wearing shades reflecting images of Worthing Pier.
