A scheme to double the size of a popular nightclub could go ahead despite failing to win the support of some neighbours.

More than 60 residents objected to plans for the Babylon Lounge, Western Esplanade, Hove, which include another storey plus extensions for a bar, a restaurant and a function room.

Members of Brighton and Hove's planning committee, who meet on Wednesday, January 14, are being recommended by officers to approve the project.

The two-level building was put up in the Seventies as the West End Cafe.

Its name was later changed to the Island, then Pebble Beach, before becoming the Babylon Lounge.

It is popular for entertainment as there is a gap between the building and homes in Kingsway.

Stephen Grimes, of Kingsway, said: "It is not a good idea to extend it as it doesn't need to be any bigger."

He said the extension would block views and increased numbers of customers would cause noise and nuisance.

If permission is granted, there will be different times of closure for the different functions ranging from midnight until 3.30am.

A taxi rank and pick-up point would be introduced to reduce the nuisance to people in nearby streets.
