Moves to shut down Worthing's museum and art gallery were today described as "cultural vandalism".

MP Tim Loughton has joined campaigners trying to stop Worthing Borough Council closing the museum to save cash.

The MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, who joined placard-waving protesters outside the complex in Chapel Road, warned any serious attempt to close the facility would amount to cultural vandalism.

Hundreds of names have already been collected on a petition against the plans, which would save £129,000 with the loss of up to eight jobs.

The council has warned it may have to mothball the building on April 1 if residents do not agree to a rise in council tax.

Campaigners say the council would have to contact every person or group who had donated artefacts which would cost more than the closure.

Mr Loughton, who studied archaeology at university, said: "Worthing Museum and Art Gallery is one of the town's gems."

The council has drawn up a hit list of facilities it says may have to shut if people oppose a 14.3 per cent increase in council tax.

The Aquarena swimming pool has also been targeted, saving a further £230,000.

Peter McCallum, chairman of Worthing Swimming Club, warned the club might fold.
