Negotiations could soon begin with developers over plans to scrap a coach and lorry park in Eastbourne to make way for dozens of new homes.

Up to 150 houses are expected to be built on land in Wartling Road despite concerns raised by the Eastbourne Ratepayers Association, which says an alternative site has yet to be found for parking vehicles.

Housing in the area was pinpointed as part of the Eastbourne Borough Plan.

Officers on Eastbourne Borough Council's planning team propose to make at least 30 per cent of the homes affordable housing units.

In September councillors gave their approval for the plans to go out to public consultation and received no objections from residents.

The site currently generates a net income of £61,350 for the council but senior planning officer Lisa Rawlinson said the homes would be an attractive landmark development."

The planning and licensing committee is tonight expected to approve recommendations for a planning brief to be printed for negotiations with potential developers.

Councillors were forced to back down last year after proposals to site a replacement 24-hour lorry park on land between Sainsbury's supermarket and the David Lloyd Club in Hampden Park, sparked controversy.

The application was withdrawn and alternative sites are still being considered.
