The Worthing players will feel the wrath of manager Alan Pook on Monday night.

That is when the Rebels boss will wield the axe on those who did not show him enough commitment against Hampton and Richmond on Saturday.

Worthing take on Kettering in the second round of the Bryco Cup at Woodside Road and a fuming Pook has told supporters to expect changes.

It will be the first time this season Pook has shown his ruthless streak. Before the Hampton game everything had been rosy.

Only three league defeats left Rebels fourth in division one south and they went into the game on the back of an impressive 4-0 FA Trophy win at Whyteleafe.

But a lacklustre performance and three soft goals have changed all that and Pook is ready to get tough.

He said: "There will be changes against Kettering. There were a few players out there who weren't prepared to die for the cause. If you don't do that then you are not going to be successful and I've got to get those players out and get rid of them. That is how strongly I feel.

"This was a six-pointer and the Hampton players realised the importance of the game. Their experienced players performed to their potential. That put some of our players in their place because they just thought they had to turn up to win at Woodside Road.

"You will know against Kettering if this is a lesson learnt because I promise Kettering are going to have to die on the pitch to beat us. We will come out and give it everything we've got.

"There won't be an inch given and we will be back to the Worthing we have been all season."

Worthing assistant manager Danny Bloor put the poor performance down to complacency. He believes Rebels' excellent FA Trophy third round win four days before worked against them.

He said: "After the win on Tuesday it was a bit of a case of after the lord mayor's show. The boys may have got a bit carried away with it.

"We let ourselves down badly and we are bitterly disappointed. There is not one player who came out of the game with any credit and from our point of view that is not good enough."

Hampton's president is Alan Simpson, the scriptwriter for the famous TV sit-com Steptoe and Son. Despite being funded on the back of a couple of rag and bone men, Hampton proved they are certainly not rubbish.

Under the management of former West Ham and England midfielder Alan Devonshire, the visitors punished Worthing's mistakes.

The first came on 26 minutes when Adrian Allen was left all alone at a corner to head in from close range.

The Rebels got themselves back in it on the stroke of half time when Glenn Davies fired in a left foot shot from the edge of the box after Hampton had only half cleared a Mark Knee corner.

More sloppy defending saw Worthing gift two goals to the visitors.

Allen was all alone when he latched onto a long ball down the inside left channel on 63 minutes and lobbed Ross Standen who had raced off his line to narrow the angle.

Ten minutes later Alan Inns easily out-jumped the Worthing defence to power a header into the bottom corner from a cross by Richard O'Connor.

The result might have been different had the Rebels converted two gilt-edge chances in the second half. With the score at 1-1, top scorer Sam Francis managed to slide the ball past Hampton keeper Adrian Blake only to see left-back Obinna Ulasi make it back in time to hook the ball off the line.

Shaun Grice had the chance to equalise just before Hampton's last goal but guided his diving header just wide. Worthing's miserable afternoon was summed up by injuries to two players.

Defender Andy Lutwyche had made an impressive debut after signing from Horsham YMCA but had to go off with knee ligament damage.

Striker Gavin Geddes was a second half substitute but was on for just three minutes before going to hospital with a suspected broken wrist, leaving Worthing down to ten men for the remaining 13 minutes.

Both players are out for tonight's game and, if Pook keeps to his word, they will not be the only ones.
