In a way I was pleased that Christopher Hawtree accused me of "ranting" as I prefer my arguments to be attacked than ignored (Letters, December 3).

But he fails to see how illogical his points are. "We all judge matters by our own lights," he insists. By this I take it to mean that we all mentally react to issues as they affect us personally.

In other words we are, in fact, "talking" about ourselves and not the issue in question.

But who is interested in Mr Hawtree's personal psychology - apart from himself of course? It is the issue we are all concerned about.

I cannot rationally accept any subjective explanation of reasoning as it "saws off the branch on which I am sitting" - if you see what I mean.

When I make claims about any issue I believe I'm talking about "it" and not myself. My reasoning may be faulty - as I'm sure it often is - but, in the case of Hove Library, I don't think it is.

This is why I find personal abuse quite unnecessary.
