People with learning disabilities could be forced out of a home in Mid Sussex if council plans get the green light.

West Sussex County Council is considering closing the Westhill Centre, near Royal George Road, Burgess Hill.

The home, which opened in the 1960s, cares for 18 people with learning disabilities. Some have lived there for more than 20 years.

Town councillor Anne Jones said: "Closing the home would mean these people would have to find somewhere else to live.

"People wouldn't expect that in their own homes but these people don't have a voice. They need the security of living there."

A decision from cabinet member Lionel Barnard on whether to approve consultation on the closure is expected next week.

Coun Jones said: "It's easy for the cabinet over in Chichester to make a decision when they don't really know what is going on.

"I just don't think some people are qualified to make this decision. They are forever moving the most vulnerable people out of their homes."

A council spokeswoman said she could not say why the council is considering closing the home until the decision has been taken.
