Regarding the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community's quest to fly the rainbow flag from civic buildings (The Argus, November 28), as an old-fashioned liberal and progressive, I am suspicious of anyone keen to fly a flag.
It usually means they want to show they have won and someone else has lost and had better shut up.
Of course, the rhetoric puts it differently and the word "celebration" is often used. Even this doesn't disguise the dubious motivation.
How depressing that the LGBT community has nailed its colours to symbolism which is so hopelessly intertwined with the historical equivalents of machismo.
No flags, please, we're tolerant here.
