The Albion hit parade is still topped by 'He shot, he scored, it must be Peter Ward'.

A new chart contender emerged a couple of seasons ago. 'When the ball hits the net it's a goal you can bet it's Zamora'.

Now there is another challenger. 'Leon Knight, Knight Knight!'

The tune has been adapted by Seagulls supporters from a party floor-filler by Arrow, called 'Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!'

It's an appropriate melody for a striker in such warm form and so regularly finding the bullseye.

Albion's latest goalscoring hero is on target to take over the No. 1 spot from Ward.

Knight's matchwinning double at Notts County last Saturday lifted the little magician's goal tally to 16 in 24 matches, already halfway to Zamora's title-spearheading total of two seasons ago.

With 20 League games left, plus the possibility of the play-offs and further progress in the LDV Vans Trophy, Knight is well on course to eclipse Ward's club record 36 goals in 1976-77.

But his priority is promotion for Albion back to the First Division rather than personal glory.

"It would be nice to break the record but as long as the team are winning and I'm playing well I'm happy," Knight said.

"Our main aim is to go up, not for me to score the record number of goals."

Knight is delighted with the progress he has made since quickly turning his loan switch from Chelsea into a permanent move.

"It's gone well from the start really," he said. "Long may it continue.

"It felt right coming here. The boys are terrific and it wasn't a big decision for me to leave Chelsea.

"They brought in Mister Abramovich and he bought a new side, so I knew as a youngster I wasn't going to get a chance.

"I felt I had to get out. When you are a footballer you just want to play games, no matter what club you are at."

If Knight continues plundering goals at his current rate, his name could well crop up when the Premiership transfer window re-opens in January.

Manager Mark McGhee said: "I can't worry about that. If it happens it happens and we will deal with it at the time. I'm not going to speculate about it.

"The number of goals he has scored so far is top drawer in any division.

"All he can do at the moment is score goals in the Second Division and he's doing that brilliantly."

McGhee believes Knight and his young partner Chris McPhee are making more of an all-round contribution now as well.

"He is working hard for the team and he has got a great attitude, so I'm more than pleased with him.

"What I've asked both Chris and him to do is to work back quicker.

"I think that is something that has improved the team and it has improved Leon's game, as well as Chris's."

Knight's prospects of re-writing the record books could be affected by injury and suspension.

Amazingly, considering his size and the stick he has been receiving from defenders, he has so far avoided a lay-off, although his ever-present record is under threat after a fourth booking in the FA Cup elimination at Lincoln earlier this month.

"I get banged about a bit, but that is part and parcel of the game," said the 21-year-old Londoner. "I recover quickly from injuries and I've only had one in the last eight years, so I've been lucky so far.

"I was aware it was my fourth booking at Lincoln, but I don't think about it. You still have to be committed."

Knight knows he will have to rely on decent service from his colleagues to continue his goal spree. He expects to benefit from the move into the centre of midfield of loan signing Mark Yeates from Spurs.

"I think that myself and Mark will become quite a good combination, along with Chris McPhee and the two wide players.

"Whenever I am asked about my goals I point out it's also about my team-mates around me. I can't do it by myself."

Knight's next goalscoring opportunity is against one of his old clubs.

He had a loan spell with QPR, the Seagulls' hosts in the southern section quarter-finals of the LDV Vans Trophy, and has already scored twice against them in the League at Withdean in August.

Yeates, meanwhile, will be on international duty in the build-up to the Sabbath trip to Loftus Road.

He is in Sean McCaffrey's Republic of Ireland under-19 squad for a friendly in France on Wednesday.

They are preparing for the second phase of qualification for the European Championships in Switzerland next summer in a group also containing Norway, Belgium and Serbia and Montenegro.

Yeates made a big impact in the first phase.

He snatched a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria and netted twice, one straight from a corner, in a 10-1 demolition of San Marino.
