A second Sussex policeman has been suspended over allegations of racism.

The unnamed officer, who works in East Sussex, is alleged to have made a racist comment to a colleague, who reported the incident to senior officers.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "We can confirm a Wealden officer has been suspended in relation to alleged racist comments made in the presence of colleagues.

The incident is being investigated by the Sussex Police Professional Standards Department.

Areas covered by Wealden include Hailsham, Crowborough, Uckfield and Heathfield.

Last month, The Argus reported how a Brighton-based officer had been suspended after allegedly telling a female colleague her ethnicity had helped her to win promotion.

The officer faces a disciplinary hearing and could be sacked.

Chief Constable Ken Jones has announced he will use undercover methods to root out racist behaviour and attitudes in his force following a BBC documentary into racism within the police service.

Police recruits from across the country were exposed making racist comments in the covert documentary and five police officers from the West Midlands, Cheshire and Wales resigned after the programme was broadcast.

Shortly afterwards the Commission for Racial Equality announced it would be launching its own inquiry into racism in the police.

Eight Kent officers are to be investigated amid accusations that a racist joke was told during an off-duty coach trip to France in October.

A member of the public, also on the coach, complained of "inappropriate behaviour" and the telling of a racist joke over the coach's announcement system.
