Paul Thomas headed the only goal of the game ten minutes from time as Chichester won 1-0 at Ringmer in the John O'Hara League Cup.
Chi boss Adie Girdler was delighted with the result, particularly as injuries force him to play defender Ben Hitchman in goal for the full 90 minutes.
Girdler said: "But for good defending and good goalkeeping we could have been 3-0 down at half time but in the second it could have been the reverse."
Chi now play Steyning Town who won 3-1 at Seaford with goals from Danny Gainsford, Tom Pickford and Gareth Dutton. Paul Mason hit a late consolation for the hosts.
Steyning boss John Bolingbroke said: "We didn't play particularly cleverly in the first half but we had a chat at half time, settled down and played a lot better in the second half."
In a first round replay, Eastbourne Town went through 4-0 away to second division Wick thanks to an own goal, Lee Walsh's 30-yard screamer, Grant Spencer and Graham Holman.
