New police technology which reads car licence plates is being used to crack down on criminals in West Sussex.

An operation by Sussex Police's Automatic Number Plate Recognition unit took place along the A27 at Chichester yesterday.

It involved officers from Sussex and Hampshire and followed a Government directive to target cross-boundary crime.

Yesterday's blitz led to recovery of a stolen vehicle.

Phil Woolf, Sussex Police spokesman, said: "In its first 21 weeks the unit, which uses computers to "read" number plates, brought in 264 prisoners, recovered stolen vehicles worth £146,000 and drugs."
