The cost of the police to council tax payers in Brighton and Hove has risen by 58 per cent over the last two years but do we feel any safer?

How many residents or tourists would feel safe walking around the city's streets at night and how many "no go" areas are there?

These are the questions "policing Sussex" should be asking.

But are the police being asked to do too much? For example, illegal parking was out of control until it was decriminalised and passed to NCP on a self-financing basis.

Are there other offences which could be dealt with on a similar basis, leaving the overstretched police to concentrate their well-trained officers on serious crime?
