Ian Davies saw his Worthing team thrash hapless Harlow 44-5 and admitted: "This game came at the right time for us."

Worthing were missing a host of first team squad members but easily saw off a Harlow side who were in even worse straits.

The result gave Worthing their first win in London One and also the only victory on Saturday among ten Sussex clubs playing in regional or national divisions.

Coach Davies admitted: "The result was good but Harlow were the worst side we have played for two or three years.

"We played well in patches. We weren't fantastic but I'll take that."

Stuart McLauchlan was outstanding in midfield for Worthing with Ben Coulson looking very sharp at full back.

Coulson was also on form with the boot, landing two penalties and four conversions to go with his try.

Terry Butler crossed twice with Raynn Bruce and Simon Alcott completing the tally.

Newly-promoted Bognor should have got off to a winning start in London Three South East after wiping out a 14-point deficit at home to Sevenoaks.

Nigel Mitchell and Tom Spurle scored tries with Rob Parry converting both and landing a penalty to make it 17-14, but the Sussex side eventually lost 30-29.

Skipper Karl Flynn and Steve Woolacombe scored further tries to keep Bognor in touch with Parry adding another conversion.

Teenage scrum half Billy Toone caught the eye but Flynn said: "You can't fall asleep for the first ten minutes like we did."

Lewes went down 37-12 away to a free-running Maidstone side, despite leading early on through a super solo score by Scott Patto, converted by Dave Tyrrell.

An inability to win lineout ball and the loss of possession in contact cost the Sussex side dear, though they gave early second-half hope to their supporters with a sweeping move for their second try.

Liam Craig-Davies made the break and Matt Sole finished.

Brighton are waiting anxiously for a fitness report from skipper Andy Pinnock, who went off after 15 minutes of Saturday's 19-10 home defeat by Charlton Park with suspected ankle ligament damage. The Waterhall side were already missing four senior backs but put up a spirited effort after falling behind.

Danie Venter scored their try with Ryan Smith converting and kicking a penalty but coach Gary Henderson admitted it was a frustrating experience.

He said: "We were thwarted by a combination of the referee and the opposition slowing the game down.

"The second half lasted 61 minutes with all the injuries and stoppages."

Chichester wasted too much good ball, plus a host of penalty chances, as they lost 19-14 at Tonbridge Juddian.

Ben Polhill was in the sin bin when Christian Davies scored Chi's first try, converted by Jack Smallman.

Polhill got over himself right on full-time with Nick Stanton adding the extra points.
