Sussex champion Rose Rainton beat her great rival Sally Weston of Horsham as the first session of the British Women's League was held at Cheltenham over the weekend.
The 33-year-old, who has won the Sussex championship seven times, defeated 36-year-old Weston 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9.
However, Weston stays top of the Sussex rankings and ahead of Rainton in the national list, possibly because of the success she has enjoyed in the carefully selected events she enters.
Despite a magnificent seven Sussex crowns over the past ten years, Bexhill's Rainton has to settle for No. 2 on the Sussex list.
The Hollington side, led by Rainton, did not reach peak form at Cheltenham.
Playing in the high-class premier division, Hollington beat Hull 4-2 and Irish Ladies 5-1 but finished third from bottom. The second session is in January.
Sara Coggon and Rainton top-scored for the Hollington team with four victories each.
