Since your article about my proposal for creating a sun palace on the West Pier (The Argus, August 28), I have met the chief executive of the West Pier Trust and am surprised to discover that English Heritage, one of the four partners of the Trust, appears to require that the pier should be reconstructed exactly to its original design.
I believe reproducing the original Victorian ornamental details would be against the public interest and a waste of money.
The English Heritage attitude seems to be based on historical sentiment and to ignore the potential for reconstructing the pier in a style which would - because of its beauty, simplicity and economy - create a unique feature for Brighton.
I have received unanimous, enthusiastic comments on my proposed design from the public and believe English Heritage's attitude should be put to the test of public opinion.
