The Government has shown brazen cheek in the way it has dealt with council tax in Brighton and Hove (Voice of The Argus, August 25).

London was nearly burnt down over the poll tax so the Tories quickly cobbled together today's council tax and business community charge, introduced in 1993.

The Tory theory was to control profligate local authorities. The rich were concerned by unreasonable council tax levels on their high value properties.

A member of the Tory poll tax replacement committee mentioned in the Press unacceptable council tax levels should be alleviated through government grants.

The bulk of local authority spending should be on statutory local needs.

Sadly, Treasury grants are being squeezed by the cost of the Iraq war, public services' escalating costs etc.
