A police officer is to appear in court following a crash which left a newborn baby fighting for his life.

Cameron Carville was being transferred by ambulance to a London hospital when it collided with a police car on a 999 call.

The ambulance overturned and Cameron, from Eastbourne, was flung out of the vehicle in south London on February 10.

Cameron was born with a rare heart defect which needed urgent surgery and was being driven to Guy's Hospital for treatment.

PC Peter Nicholson, based at Kennington police station, has now been charged for driving without due care and attention.

He will appear at Bow Street Magistrates Court on September 4, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said today.

Meanwhile, little Cameron has made a full recovery and The Argus yesterday featured a smiling picture of him looking in rude health.

The only signs of his trauma are a scar on his chest from his heart operation and a small dent in his head.
