Chichester High runner Charlotte Browning has completed a national hat-trick.

She lifted the 1,500m under-17s' title (4min. .25.6sec) at the AAA Championships in Sheffield.

It followed successive victories in her two years at under-15s.

She pipped in-form Stacey Johnson (Cannock) into second with Hannah England (Oxford), runner-up at the All-England Schools' Championship, third.

The event was run as a straight final because there were only 15 runners and Browning got her tactics right.

She said: "I have been in good form for the last two weeks, trained very well and found the race easier than I thought I would.

"As it was a straight final, I knew I could just blast it. Normally I would just sit in and sprint but I did a mixture of front running and tracking.

"The pace changes took a lot out of the other athletes. I kicked with 800m to take the lead, eased off down the back straight and then kicked again at the bell."

Wade Bennett-Jackson (Worthing High), the European Youth 100m and 200m champion, won a silver medal at the shorter sprint.

He was second to Craig Pickering (Milton Keynes) in 10.8sec.

Bennett-Jackson, in his final individual meeting of the season, also gained a bronze medal at 200m (21.73sec).

He said: "I really wanted to beat Craig. I have a faster time than him but he wins every time we meet head-to-head. It has been hectic and I was tired but I wasn't happy with my running."

Ellen Howarth-Brown (Chichester High) was second to Ellie Childs (Pitreavie, Scotland) in the 300m hurdles in a repeat of their Home Schools' International showdown.

Childs equalled the British record of 41.98sec, while Howarth-Brown clocked 43.2sec. Cara Paine (Hastings) was fourth in 44.95sec.
