Police have stopped more than 300 people at the scene of a drive-by shooting.

Twenty officers questioned pedestrians and motorists in the hope of finding clues to the identity of two motorbike riders who shot a businessman as he sat in his new £50,000 silver Mercedes.

Detective Chief Inspector Reg Hooke, heading the inquiry, said: "People in the area of the shooting have been very forthcoming.

"We have identified a number of significant witnesses."

Meanwhile, the 45-year-old victim from Hastings, continued to fight for life.

He was shot twice in the head and was under police guard last night in hospital where his condition was critical.

He was at crossroads at Cripps Corner, Battle, just after 6.30am on Monday when the bikers pulled up and shot him.

Their green Kawasaki 750 Ninja, carrying a false number plate "VI LON", was found later on the nearby Sedlescombe Road.

Some witnesses reported seeing the motorbike and two riders acting suspiciously.

They were dressed in fluorescent yellow tops. Initial reports said their crash helmets were blue but police believe after taking other statements this may not be the case.

Police are witholding the man's name believing he and his family could remain at risk.

They want to talk to anyone who saw the bike or the riders. Call the Operation Avalanche incident room on 0845 6070999.
