Protesters will take to the streets in a bid to save a threatened post office in Eastbourne.

The branch in Upperton Road faces closure as Post Office bosses attempt to stem losses of almost £65,000 a year.

The demonstration, planned for tomorrow morning, is being organised by Eastbourne Liberal Democrats, who hope to draw townspeople into the battle to keep the branch open.

Stephen Lloyd, a Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman, said: "This is a chance for local people to show their anger and frustration at the Post Office's closure plans.

"There are only four weeks to go before the final decision is taken so it is vital as many people as possible join in the fight to keep the Upperton Road Post Office open."

Petition forms will also be circulated.

Post Office bosses said closing the branch was the only feasible way of trimming costs.

The branch will be the second to close in the town after the Whitley Road office shut earlier this year.

Kevin Ray, head of area for Post Office Ltd, said customers would be able to use the nearby Terminus Road or Ocklynge Road branches as an alternative.

Mr Lloyd said the closure of the main office, in November, would leave a hole in the fabric of the town and inconvenience people.

He said: "To anyone who wants this important main branch to stay open, please come along and sign our petition at 10.30am on Saturday morning.
