I am writing to object to the proposed Asda store on the sixth form college site at the West Worthing/Goring border.

I met an Asda planning officer at the open day at the college and he advised me that Worthing Council wishes future supermarkets to be in the town centre.

If this is the case, I do not see what the attraction is in building one at the West Worthing/Goring border, other than having a re-built college free of charge.

Regarding the Strand, I hardly think it is fair on the diverse local traders, most of whom will be very badly affected by this.

Safeway, which opened in recent times, will regret its decision and it will sound the death knell for the Co-operative.

We already have a Tesco at Durrington and Sainsburys at Lyons Farm.

Asda is owned by the American corporation Walmart and will look to carry out aggressive marketing and pricing for which it has a reputation.

Surely the council owes some loyalty to existing and well established traders?

The ideal site would be further into the Goring/Durrington border, possibly near Titnore Lane where there is a planned development of new housing.

Dreadful bottlenecks and pollution would also build up at the Boulevard and the Strand.

The Boulevard is one of only three direct north/south routes in the town and is very busy most of the time with school and college children and shoppers.

I dare not think what the junction would become with a major supermarket in full swing.

Finally, there are the residents of the area, particularly Bolsover Road, where the noise and traffic will become unbearable.

Who is going to compensate them for their loss of enjoyment and the de-valuation to their properties?
