Bowlers spoke of their health fears after plans for another mobile phone mast were tabled.

Telecommunications company Marconi wanted to raise by more than 5m the height of a 15m tower already in place at Worthing Football Club in Woodside Road.

The proposal sparked a petition compiled by 44 people living in St Elmo Road, Bulkington Avenue and Woodside Road.

They argued that there were already too many "health-endangering" masts at the stadium, and said: "Enough is enough."

Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club, which is next-door to the ground, said there was no guarantee the radiation emitted from masts was safe.

Bowlers played within a few metres of the aerials and were constantly subjected to possibly harmful rays.

Marconi said the mast was necessary to accommodate a nationwide network of mobile radio communications called Airwave, serving the needs of police and other emergency services.

The system had been commissioned by the Home Office for all police forces in the country, enabling them to communicate with each other.

But planners rejected the application, stating the mast's height, siting and design would have an adverse impact on the character of the area.
