Bobby Zamora is just the player to put the smile back on the faces of Tottenham fans.

That is the verdict of City-based former Albion midfielder George Parris who believes Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle carried out some good business when he signed Zamora for £1.5million earlier this month.

"I watched Bobby quite a bit in the past two seasons and I always felt it would be only a matter of time before a bigger club snapped him up," said Parris.

"Goalscorers are hard to come by and Bobby's record is impressive so he deserves a chance at the highest level. Whenever I spoke to Bobby he always came across as being very level-headed and I am sure once he settles in at Spurs he will prove to be a good acquisition."

Zamora, still 22 and a Tottenham fan, bagged 76 goals in 146 appearances in his time at Brighton. He kicked off his Spurs career in style with a debut double in a friendly win at Oxford United last weekend.

Hoddle took his time before he finally landed Zamora, but feels the player has developed well.

The Tottenham boss, currently leading his team on a tour of South Africa, said: "We'd been monitoring him for a very long time. I saw him a lot last year and I feel he's matured now, he has the experience in the England under-21s and has great attributes for a striker."

For his part, Zamora is keeping his feet on the ground. He said: "Now I'm here I've a simple target which is play a few games and score a few goals. It will be tough to step up but I'm young and I will learn. Hopefully it will all come good and I'll score goals for Tottenham."
