Detectives are continuing to question two men over the murder of Mid Sussex barman Colin Stewart.

The pair were re-arrested yesterday and kept in custody overnight.

Meanwhile, Mr Stewart's family have paid tribute to popular 32-year-old who died after a fight at a petrol station.

He had become embroiled in a row about queue jumping at the Esso petrol station in Franklyns Road, Haywards Heath, late on Saturday and was punched in the head.

After the fight was broken up by his brother, Mr Stewart made his way home to nearby Hanbury Lane.

But at 1.30am on Sunday he was found collapsed by a neighbour and taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

He underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot but died yesterday morning.

Yesterday his friends and relatives gathered at the home he shared with stepfather David Gatcum and brothers Davey and Paul Stewart.

Davey, 35, a porter at the Birchwood Hotel, Haywards Heath, said: "Everybody adored him. I went to his bar this morning and grown men had been coming in and breaking down in tears.

"No one can understand it or take it in. He would go into all the charity shops and knew all the old women in the town. If you stopped people in the street in Haywards Heath, they'd know him.

"Haywards Heath has lost a good friend. If you bumped into him you wouldn't get away for half an hour."

His stepfather, a 57-year-old night manager at the Birchwood Hotel, said: "He had loads of friends. They are all round. People keep coming by and the phone hasn't stopped ringing.

"The estate opposite brought round a card which loads of people had signed.

"He loved people, which is why he loved working in the bar. He had the ugliest jumper which he would always wear when he was going out. His friends came up to me earlier and asked if they could put the jumper in the coffin."

A Sussex Police spokesman said today: "The men were arrested at about 5pm yesterday and were kept in custody overnight. They have not been charged."

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt, of the major crime branch at Sussex Police, said: "This is now a murder investigation and we are urging those witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact us.

"The garage was unusually busy at the time and I am not convinced everyone who was there has come forward. It is important they do so now so we can establish what happened and the reasons behind it."

Detectives say they are particularly keen to speak to a young woman with shoulder-length dark blonde hair who was at the garage. She was wearing blue jeans and a black T-shirt with a gold design down the front, and hoop earrings.

There was also a taxi, possibly an estate car, on the forecourt.

The two men in custody were originally arrested on Sunday and released on police bail.
