A man accused of attacking Sarah Payne's killer Roy Whiting in prison has appeared in court.

Rickie Tregaskis, 34, appeared before Leeds magistrates yesterday charged with wounding with intent.

Whiting was sentenced to life in prison in 2001 for the murder of eight-year-old Sarah.

She disappeared while playing near her grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, East Preston, in 2000. Her body was found near Pulborough 17 days later.

Tregaskis is accused of attacking Whiting on August 4 last year in Wakefield prison.

District Judge Roy Anderson remanded Tregaskis in custody to Long Lartin jail in Worcestershire.

He will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on July 22.
