A dog was rescued from a smoke-filled flat in Brighton last night.
The occupants left their first-floor home with food cooking on the stove.
Firefighters were called to the address in Upper Rock Gardens just after 6pm.
They used a ladder to reach a window and climbed through.
A brigade spokesman said: "The dog was pretty old and was lying down. He was a bit confused but was otherwise unhurt."
The dog was led to safety just as the occupants rushed home after realising they had left the cooker on.
Other residents in the block were also evacuated. Minor damage was caused.
