Residents in Adur could be asked to fork out on increasing the amount of their rubbish that is composted.

At present, residents buy garden waste sacks for £1.40 and then leave them outside with other rubbish on collection day.

But council bosses want to join forces with not-for-profit company Magpie, which has provided recycling in Brighton for 12 years.

Under the new scheme, garden sacks would be reduced in price by 10p - but the council would get 89p less for each sack, meaning £2,735 of public money would be lost for every 4,000 sacks composted.

The proposal was due to be discussed last night by members of the district council's community services committee.

Meanwhile, weekly blue box recycling collections return to Adur in September.

The service will be paid for by a £300,000 Government grant.

Gill Moss, Adur's waste and recycling officer, said: "It's critical that you use the new improved recycling service to increase the amount you recycle and reduce the waste going to landfill."
