Moves to get Brighton and Hove involved in the Olympic Games received a friendly reception from Sports Minister Richard Caborn.
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Ken Bodfish put his ideas about what could happen if the national bid is successful, to the minister.
Coun Bodfish said that by 2012, if the London bid was accepted, a new community stadium at Falmer should be ready.
It was also possible a large new indoor arena would, by then, be available at Black Rock to stage some other events, he said.
Coun Bodfish added: "It might be possible for Brighton and Hove to host one of the big national teams."
