Homosexual police officers in Sussex will be allowed to join the Pride festival in their uniforms.
Permission has been granted for them to walk with people during the event in Brighton and Hove on August 9.
Last night's announcement from Sussex Police, just hours after the force said the decision was still under discussion, was welcomed by James Ledward, a committee member for Pride in Brighton and Hove.
He said: "That is wonderful. This will send out a very positive message to the community."
Pride, one of the biggest, free gay parties in the UK, attracts more than 50,000 people each year.
It was not known whether any gay police officers will actually join the festival parade.
The approval by Sussex Police follows the decision to allow uniformed officers belonging to the Gay Police Association to march at the front of London's National Pride Parade.
Some forces have banned officers from wearing their uniforms at Pride because they regard it as a political event.
