Two hundred adult students will be forced to relocate to continue their work when City College Brighton and Hove closes down a learning centre.

The Flexible Learning Centre, based at the Connaught Centre, Connaught Road, Hove, will close on July 31.

The college, which runs the centre, said it made the decision to close the facility because not enough people were using it.

Although 200 students are registered, the college said there was often no more than 12 people using the one-room centre at a time.

Instead, the students have been offered the chance to transfer to the new Flexible Learning Centre based at the main City College in Pelham Street, Brighton, along with their tutors.

The move will allow them to take advantage of the £8.2 million refurbished building, which includes a library and refectory and the advice and guidance services, which are not available at the Hove centre.

The flexible learning centres run on a drop-in basis, allowing people to study for GCSE, A-level and computer courses.

Student Silvana Galea, 34, of Poynings Drive, Hove is angry about the closure.

She has a two-year-old daughter whose nursery is ten minutes away from the Hove centre.

She said travelling to Brighton was inconvenient and would mean an extra two hours' travelling time a week.

Miss Galea has completed a computer literacy and information technology course and is now doing a European computer driving licence course.

She received a letter last week, telling her she would have to transfer by early next month.

She said: "It is going to be an inconvenience. I am going to have to catch two buses.

"There are elderly people there. They are not going to want to travel to Brighton. I am angry. I have never felt so strongly.

"I am so happy there. I have got a big chance to get some qualifications and go back to work and contribute something to the community."

Judy Parkes, marketing manager at City College, said most of the students were in favour of transferring to Brighton.

She said: "There are probably some of them who prefer Hove. We are sorry but it is just is not viable to keep it going.

"We have got better facilities here and we think that will be better for the learners."
