An East Sussex care home will close in four months despite the efforts of campaigners.

Letters have been sent to employees at the Moreton Centre in St Leonards, telling them the home will shut on October 31.

Only two long-stay residents remain at the home in Boscobel Road and it is likely they will be evicted long before this date.

The home's closure follows failed last-ditch efforts by campaigners at the High Court in London.

Mr Justice Maurice Kay dismissed the families' case, saying East Sussex County Council had acted properly.

His ruling meant the council could go ahead with its plans to turn the home into a 30-place rehabilitation centre to ease hospital bed-blocking, using £1 million of Government cash.

Campaigners are demanding to know from council bosses what replacement respite care provision it will provide.

Earlier this month, partially-blind resident Clara Dudley, 86, was wheeled up to 10 Downing Street in an effort to enlist the help of Tony Blair.

A 4,500-name petition was also handed over during her visit. The only other legal avenue left open to campaigners is the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

However, such a legal battle would take at least two years, by which time the home would already be closed.
