A man once charged with the manslaughter of Sussex father-of-two Jay Abatan has been found dead.

Relatives found the body of Graham Curtis, 40, hanging at his home in Port Hall Road, Brighton.

Tests are continuing today to determine the cause of death but police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Curtis, who worked with computers in London, was found on Saturday but details have only just emerged.

Along with a second man he had been charged with the manslaughter of Jay Abatan, 42, who died after being punched in a taxi queue outside the Ocean Rooms night club in Morley Street, Brighton, in 1999.

The charges were dropped after Brighton magistrates ruled there was insufficient evidence. The following year, both men were cleared of assaulting Mr Abatan's brother, Michael.

A scuffle had started after a dispute over who had ordered a cab and Michael suffered a cut and black eye.

Jay, from The Meads, Eastbourne, was attacked and sent crashing to the pavement.

He lay motionless and limp on the ground as the taxi drove away and, fell into a coma and later died in hospital from head injuries.

A £175,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender or offenders and Sussex Police are continuing their investigation.

Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo said today: "Mr Curtis's tragic death does not change things. Our inquiry is still open and active."

Michael, Jay's partner Tanya Haynes and West Worthing MP Peter Bottomley launched a Justice for Jay campaign to highlight the case and press for more information from witnesses.

His death was also featured on BBC's Crimewatch programme.

After meeting police and legal experts, family members said they would consider a private prosecution if the police investigation proved fruitless.

Michael was unavailable for comment this morning.
