A man whose terrified daughters came close to crashing during a road rage attack has threatened to take the law into his own hands if the culprits are not caught.

Engineer Dave King lent his Ford Fiesta to daughter Sarah, 19, and she was driving her boyfriend and pregnant sister back to the family home in Wilmot Road, Shoreham, when the incident took place on Monday.

Mr King, 45, said: "I am law-abiding, but there are times these days when you are left feeling that the only alternative is to sort it yourself. I am keeping this option open."

Sarah was overtaking a white van on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 Lancing flyover, when two men in a blue Vauxhall Calibra raced up behind her.

She said: "I put my hazards on to warn them to back off, because I had nowhere to go. The second I got a chance I tried to pull in.

"They were aiming at the front panel of the Fiesta and I was constantly having to brake to get out of the way. They threw a Lucozade bottle out of the window, and were shouting and swearing, and swerving.

"The passenger's whole top half was out of the window and he was trying to get hold of the Fiesta."

Sarah said she recognised the men because she had seen them come into the shop where she works. She also got the car's registration number and passed it to the police but officers have not yet traced them.

Mr King, 45, said: "My eldest could have miscarried or gone into labour or they might all have died over the edge."

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "The issue is trying to find someone first - it's still very early days. Certainly we wouldn't recommend anyone taking anything into their own hands."

Witnesses can call Sgt Ian Cooke on 0845 6070999.
