The search for a developer for a key site could begin if members of a council committee give the go-ahead.

A plan drawn up for the Preston Barracks site off Lewes Road, Brighton, says its development will generate more than 1,000 jobs, create 260 homes, and include 110 affordable homes.

The redevelopment is a joint project between the city council, the Brighton and Hove regeneration project and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).

A development brief will be published and formal expressions of interest invited.

The council hopes to reach this stage by August.

The developer chosen will liaise closely with Brighton University, which owns the land bordering the site, and eb4u, the Government scheme for East Brighton.

Council leader Ken Bodfish said: "We look forward to hearing some exciting proposals."

The city's policy and resources committee will discuss the development at its meeting on June 18.
