More than 400 businesses will go bust every week for the next three years, a study has predicted.

Some 63,000 business will fold by 2006 as the consumer spending slowdown takes its toll, the latest Industry Watch report by consultants BDO Stoy Hayward says.

Business failures rose by six per cent last year, with 19,928 firms going under - 383 every week - compared to 18,783 in 2001.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 businesses look set to fold every three months over the next three years.
