Mr Mills from Woodingdean (Letters, June 5) has obviously not tried to negotiate the area around Windlesham School in Dyke Road at 8.30am and 3.30pm every day.

Contrary to what he says, there are probably no more than three parents who don't use 4x4s.

They are simply fashion accessories for certain parents and certainly not, by any stretch of the imagination, a necessity.

Can he point out an area within the catchment of any major Sussex school where the access terrain is so mountainous and rugged that a Land Rover is an essential means of transport?

I know some of the roads are potholed but they aren't that bad.

The simple fact is these gas guzzlers are an unnecessary status symbol used by inconsiderate drivers undertaking journeys that could often be walked or undertaken equally conveniently in a 1.1 litre car that takes up a third less parking space and uses four-times less fuel.
